“Sushi?! That’s raw fish, right? I’m not eating stuff like that!“ I guess this is something many people have heard before when they wanted to introduce sushi to a friend. But in fact sushi is a delicatessen.

But let’s start with what exactly it is:

At first one should know that there are different kinds of sushi. To start with there is the so called Nigiri Sushi. This is the classical kind of sushi consisting of rice that is shaped to the form of a cube and some piece of fish placed on it. Instead of raw fish you can also have an omelette or a piece of grilled eel, which is fixed with an alga-band.

Another well-known kind of sushi is the so-called Hoso Maki. Hoso Maki consists of small rolls with stuffing and an outer layer of alga. The stuffing is made of many different ingredients like for example different sorts of fish, fish eggs, Japanese mushrooms, cucumber and avocado.
Ura Maki is similar to the Hoso Maki but with one important difference: the sushi that is also known as the “inside-out-sushi” is basically Hoso Maki with another layer of rice around it and fish eggs or sesame sticking on this layer of rice. These bigger rolls are often more expensive than the normal sushi rolls.

Last but certainly not least there is Temaki Sushi, the last kind of sushi I’ll mention at this stage. Temaki sushi is made up of little alga bags with a filling, which again consists of rice and small piece of fish.

In addition to all of the sushi named above restaurants serve some hot “Wasabi” (Japanese green horseradish) and soy sauce. Wasabi and soy sauce are mixed and then used as a dip. Ginger is supposed to neutralize the taste in between.
